The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is moving forward with the development of the Bhumibol Dam Floating Solar Project 1 in Tak Province, with a generating capacity of 158 MWac, according to Mr. Thidade Eiamsai, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy at EGAT. The project, which involves generating electricity from floating solar panels installed on the dam’s reservoir, is part of Thailand’s broader strategy to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065 through carbon offset and avoidance mechanisms. The commercial operation is expected to commence in 2027. EGAT has begun selling bidding documents for the project, inviting interested parties to participate in fostering clean energy development. The bidding documents are available for purchase until April 18, 2025, with sealed bids set to be opened on July 14, 2025 (subject to change). The Bhumibol Dam Floating Solar Project 1 will be integrated into Thailand’s Power Development Plan 2018–2037 (PDP2018 Revision 1) as well as the upcoming revised PDP. EGAT plans to expand similar floating solar projects across its dam sites nationwide, targeting a total capacity of 2,725 MW by 2030. These initiatives aim to increase Thailand’s clean energy share while optimizing existing resources by leveraging dam reservoirs for solar panel installation. The projects will also integrate solar power generation with existing hydropower facilities, reducing generation costs and ensuring affordable, sustainable electricity with minimal environmental impact. |
