Work Detail Ascent Solar Technologies, a leading U.S. innovator in lightweight, flexible thin-film solar solutions, has received a new order to refine its space solar products after evaluation by a potential customer interested in beamed power technology. The company’s CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) photovoltaic products have been tested by multiple third parties for their ability to receive beamed power. In response, Ascent designed, prototyped, and delivered an optimized module in under a month for further testing and evaluation. Recent analysis compared both a standard commercial off-the-shelf CIGS PV module and the newly optimized prototype for beamed power applications. The results validated Ascent’s CIGS material’s strong thermal properties and demonstrated a path to improving performance and power output. Following additional testing this week, the company received an order for a more advanced prototype, which is now undergoing design refinements. Paul Warley, CEO of Ascent Solar Technologies, stated, “As interest grows for power beaming and space-based solar power, our thin-film PV technology will stand out as a clear solution for maximizing efficiency while mitigating the risks around solar solutions in space. As we continue to fine-tune our technology to meet each of our customers’ unique needs, we expect to experience increased demand and revenue opportunities.” Ascent’s ability to rapidly iterate and customize solar solutions is supported by its 5MW manufacturing facility in Thornton, CO. Unlike traditional silicon-based space solar providers, Ascent leverages its flexible CIGS manufacturing process to adjust designs and production methods to meet specific customer needs. This agility allows the company to offer advanced, tailored solar solutions for space applications. As demand for space-based solar power grows, Ascent is well-positioned to provide high-performance products that meet the evolving needs of global customers.
