The Rosario City Council approved an ordinance amending the Special Urban Redevelopment Plan for the former 121st Battalion, allowing for the construction of the Olympic Village for the 2026 Odesur Games. Following the competition, the buildings will be used by middle-class families in the city. In addition, commercial use was authorized on the ground floors as a complement to the Ayacucho Open-Air Shopping Center. The project includes the construction of two towers: one with a ground floor and four floors (14.5 meters high) and another with a ground floor and eight floors (25 meters high). During the Games, these buildings will house athletes, coaches, and referees from the participating delegations. The Santa Fe government will then award them by lottery to families with the ability to pay, at prices below market prices. In addition to the housing, the site will feature two Olympic-sized pools: one 50 meters long for swimming and another for diving. These facilities will be located in the space originally planned for the Bicentennial Library, on Lamadrid Street between Ayacucho and Leiva Streets. The infrastructure upgrades aim to ensure a sporting legacy for the city after the event. Another amendment approved in the ordinance affects the planning of parking garages. Instead of being underground, as the original project envisioned, they will be built at ground level to optimize costs and construction times. The former Battalion 121 site holds significant historical value, as a clandestine detention center operated there during the last civil-military dictatorship. Currently, part of the land houses Zone i of the Rosario Technology Park, where several innovative companies operate. The development of this Olympic Village will not only guarantee accommodation for the delegations during the 2026 Odesur Games, but will also provide affordable housing for many Rosario families, in addition to enhancing the sports and commercial infrastructure in the south of the city. |
