Work Detail The Buenos Aires City Government announced the construction of a vehicle tunnel and a pedestrian ring road that will improve connectivity between Bajo Belgrano and Aeroparque. The project, which will cover 10,000 square meters, will require an investment of over $50 billion and will have a 20-month completion period. The bidding process is expected to begin in September 2025, and construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2026. The project includes the construction of a tunnel that will pass under the Leopoldo Lugones Highway, the Belgrano Norte railway tracks, and the Illia Highway, improving traffic between the urban area, the Costanera, and Aeroparque. In addition, an elevated pedestrian ring road with a 140-meter bike path will be incorporated, which will function as a panoramic viewing platform from which aircraft takeoffs and landings can be observed. The project aims to optimize traffic in the area, streamlining the connection between Figueroa Alcorta Avenue and the Costanera Rafael Obligado. It will also provide a new access alternative to the north, benefiting strategic points such as the University City, the River Plate stadium, the Innovation Park, and the Coastal Park. The Buenos Aires City Government emphasized that this project was selected through an international competition in which experts from around the world participated. The selected proposal combines transportation, public space, security, and connectivity, in addition to providing a new architectural landmark for the city. The structural design of the pedestrian ring road was carried out without support columns, making it a remarkable piece of modern engineering and urban planning. During the construction phase, partial traffic restrictions are expected on the Lugones Highway for the construction of the tunnel, although the installation of the pedestrian loop will not affect vehicle traffic. According to authorities, this project will significantly reduce travel times during peak hours and alleviate congestion in one of the citys busiest areas. With this initiative, the City Government reinforces its commitment to improving urban infrastructure and mobility, ensuring better integration between the capitals various sectors and facilitating access to the river through an innovative and functional project.
