This is a collaboration with the state-owned company China Communications Country Limited (CCCC). The investment will be around $80 million. It will be located in the department of Matagalpa. The Nicaraguan Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) and the state-owned company China Communications Country Limited (CCCC) have announced the start of construction of the 67.35 MW El Hato photovoltaic plant, which will be developed in Ciudad Darío, in the department of Matagalpa. This project will reportedly involve an investment of $80 million. In April of last year, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega signed two agreements authorizing the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) to sign a contract with CCCC to design, supply, and build the 67.35 MW El Hato photovoltaic plant in the north of the country. On that occasion, it was explained that the project aims for the photovoltaic plant to generate enough energy to reduce the Nicaraguan Water and Sewer Company (ENACAL)s electricity bill by approximately 40%. The Production, Economy, and Budget Commission of the Nicaraguan National Assembly had stated that 95% of drinking water currently requires pumping, which is why this solar plant will be very important for the state-owned company, it was stated. When operational, it will become the largest solar project in the country. Currently, in addition to a handful of low-capacity isolated systems, Nicaragua has three solar plants: Solaris, a 12 MW plant operating since 2017; La Trinidad, a 1.4 MW plant since 2013; and El Jaguar, a 16 MW plant inaugurated last year. Between the three mentioned above, which together account for nearly 30 MW, the Central American country covers about 2% of energy demand. |
