The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a flood control structure along a critical section of the Catanauan River to mitigate the recurring flood risks in Barangay 10, Catanauan, Quezon Province. DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Region IV-A Director Jovel G. Mendoza, said that the 380-lineal meter revetment-type flood control project is designed to address the overflowing of Catanauan River into the communities and agricultural lands. The project includes pile driving of steel sheet piles, a hand-laid rock embankment reinforced with boulders, and structural concrete for added durability. Additionally, numerous cross drains were installed to efficiently direct rain and floodwaters back into the river, reducing waterlogging in the surrounding areas. “Aside from flood mitigation, the project supports environmental sustainability by integrating hard engineering solutions with natural flood defenses, the structure allows mangroves and other vegetation to flourish in front of the revetment,” added Director Mendoza. Implemented by the DPWH Quezon 3rd District Engineering Office, the flood control structure along the Catanauan River was funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA) with a contract amount of P96.5 million. “The DPWH is committed in the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Program to enhance the countrys disaster resiliency and protect vulnerable communities from natural disasters,” said Director Mendoza. |
