Work Detail Network Rail is investing GBP 18 million (EUR 21.5 million) to upgrade and renew vital infrastructure on the Inverclyde Line in Scotland. Work will take place at a range of locations between Port Glasgow and Gourock and Wemyss Bay to renew track, refurbish structures and repair a tunnel on the railway. Engineers will be renewing points – rails which move trains from one track to another – at Wemyss Bay Junction to the west of Port Glasgow station. In Greenock work will be taking place to replace lineside walls between Cartsdyke and Greenock Central stations while a railway bridge over Sinclair Street in the town will also have its timber deck, which carries the track, replaced. At Newton Street tunnel, which runs for over a mile between Greenock West and Fort Matilda stations, engineers will be carrying out stonework repairs and water-proofing the structure. To keep passengers on the move, replacement buses will run between Paisley Gilmour Street and Wemyss Bay / Gourock. “This vital work will help improve performance and reliability for our customers. Our engineers will work around-the-clock to complete these projects as quickly as possible and we thank passengers for their understanding while this crucial investment takes place,” Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland route director, said. The entire 58 km Inverclyde Line, in West Central Scotland, runs from Glasgow Central station through Paisley and a series of stations to the south of the River Clyde and the Firth of Clyde, terminating at Gourock and Wemyss Bay, where it connects to Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services. The comprises a 11.5 km section between Glasgow Central and Paisley, the 22 km Paisley – Wemyss Bay Junction, the 8.5 km Gourock Branch, and the 16 km Wemyss Bay Branch. Along the line there are several tunnels including the Bishopton Tunnels, the Wellpark Tunnel and the 2 km Newton Street Tunnel, which is the longest railway tunnel in Scotland, with a double track running between Greenock West and Fort Matilda.
