The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of the Province of Buenos Aires announced a call for bids for the construction of a new building at Penitentiary Unit No. 15 in Batán. The project, which aims to alleviate overcrowding at the prison, has a budget of $3,072,152,114 and will add 124 new spaces. The project was formalized through Public Tender 18/2024, published in the Official Gazette, and envisages the construction of a collective pavilion within the maximum security sector. Bidding will be opened on March 28th, and the estimated completion time is 180 days, with the expectation of completion before the end of the year. Batán prison currently has 1,106 spaces, but houses approximately 1,600 inmates, reflecting significant overcrowding. The new infrastructure, which will be built on a 1,030 square meter area, will consist of two independent sections to optimize inmate distribution and security. The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights noted that this project had been initially awarded in 2021, although it was never completed. With the new tender and secured financing, its completion is expected to contribute to improving the conditions of the Buenos Aires prison system. |
