Work Detail |
Natural gas dominates the auction offering, with 228 projects totaling 61,635 MW. Biofuel-fired thermal power plants (87 projects) are registered, totaling 6,962 MW, and thermal power plant expansions (12 projects totaling 5,476 MW). In February, the Brazilian Energy Agency (EPE) completed the registration of projects for participation in the first Capacity Reserve Auction of 2025. Announced by the Ministry of Mines and Energy through Normative Ordinance No. 96/GM/MME/2024, the auction is scheduled for June 27, 2025. A total of 327 projects were registered, including thermal power plants and hydroelectric plant expansions, totaling an installed capacity of more than 74 GW. Of this total, 67% are new thermal power plants, 30% are existing thermal power plants, and 3% are hydroelectric plant expansions. Natural gas dominates the auction offering, with 228 projects totaling 61,635 MW. Biofuel-fired thermal power plants follow, with 87 registered projects totaling 6,962 MW, and thermal power plant expansions, with 12 projects totaling 5,476 MW. The projects will undergo a technical evaluation by the EPE and will be eligible to participate in the auction before June 16. The auction bid, therefore, should be lower than the 74 GW registered. The auction will contract nine different products, depending on the type of plant and the start of energy supply. Thermal power plants will have nine products, with supply starting in 2025, 2026, and 2027 for existing projects, and 2028, 2029, and 2030. There are two products for existing thermal power plants (2028A, 2029A, and 2030A) and two for new power plants (2028B, 2029B, and 2030B). The storage segment is closely monitoring this first reserve capacity auction, as a dedicated competition for battery projects is planned for the second half of the year, and demand for battery projects could be affected by the volume of energy contracted in the first LRCAP auction in June. |
