Work Detail Técnicas Reunidas has been selected to provide engineering services for one of Europes largest green methanol plants, marking a significant step in advancing renewable energy solutions. The Spanish decarbonization company REOLUM has awarded a consortium comprising Técnicas Reunidas and Siemens Energy the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the La Robla Green project. This ambitious initiative will be developed in La Robla, León, Spain. The proposed plant is designed to produce 140,000 tons of green methanol annually by combining biogenic carbon from a biomass cogeneration plant with renewable hydrogen. This advanced e-methanol production technology is expected to play a crucial role in decarbonizing the maritime sector by serving as both a direct fuel and a feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Additionally, green methanol’s low-emission profile makes it vital for reducing carbon footprints in high-emission industries such as chemicals, air transport, and shipping. The La Robla Green project combines the expertise of several key industry leaders specializing in decarbonization technologies. Alongside Técnicas Reunidas and Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will provide CO2 capture technology, while Johnson Matthey will supply its proprietary eMERALD™ technology. This innovative solution enables the direct hydrogenation of captured CO2 into methanol, further enhancing the plant’s efficiency and sustainability. As part of the contract, Siemens Energy will manage the renewable hydrogen unit, while Técnicas Reunidas will oversee the biogenic carbon capture and e-methanol production units. This collaborative effort aligns with Técnicas Reunidas broader decarbonization strategy, known as TRACK, which is a key element of their SALTA strategic program launched in May. The FEED phase is a critical step toward the plant’s final construction, which will proceed under an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract. The project recently received €180 million in funding from the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge as part of the NextGenerationEU initiative. This funding supports the creation of seven large renewable hydrogen clusters across Aragon, Andalusia, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, and Galicia, forming the H2 Valles Program. The La Robla Green project is set to become a milestone in sustainable energy development, reinforcing Spain’s position as a leader in renewable methanol production and contributing significantly to global decarbonization efforts. Reolum designs and develops innovative projects aimed at driving decarbonization and advancing the energy transition. Their initiatives span renewable energy generation, green hydrogen, and green e-methanol production, along with CO2 capture, biomass cogeneration for electricity and heat, and biomass supply. Técnicas Reunidas is an international engineering company with over six decades of experience and a proven record of delivering more than 1,000 industrial plants across 25 countries. The company specializes in the design and construction of large-scale industrial facilities, with a primary focus on producing clean fuels, natural gas, and chemical products.
