Wood Mackenzies fourth delegation will travel to impoverished areas of Puerto Rico in March to install solar panels and energy storage systems. To commemorate International Womens Day, the consulting firm Wood Mackenzie, in collaboration with the Lets Share the Sun Foundation, donated 24 solar panels and 2 storage batteries to a shelter for victims of domestic violence in Puerto Rico. This is a 10.8 kW DC system and a 27.2 kWh battery. The delegation will spend a week in the municipality of Adjuntas installing solar panels and energy storage systems in homes. This is the 4th time that a delegation of Wood Mackenzie volunteers will travel to Puerto Rico to address the critical energy needs of vulnerable communities. Since their initial trip in 2022, Wood Mackenzie has supported the installation of more than 250 solar panels and dozens of energy storage systems to help power 39 homes and multiple shelters for victims of domestic violence. In 2023, the group commissioned a solar photovoltaic and energy storage system for Casa Julia, a group of women’s shelters on the island. According to the consultancy, from 2023 to 2024, the system saved Casa Julia $8,000 in energy costs, helped prevent 77 power outages that affected the area, and provided 100% of the shelter’s energy coverage. The system the group commissioned in 2024 has provided similar benefits, with the annual utility savings going toward important rehabilitation initiatives for residents. Founded in 2010, Lets Share the Sun is a 501c3 foundation that facilitates the use of solar energy and energy storage in poor communities around the world and has helped install solar power in energy-stressed areas of Haiti, Honduras and Puerto Rico.
