Despite this, solar energys contribution to the countrys mix was only 2%. The main generating sources are hydroelectric (61%), thermal (30%), wind (7%) and solar. The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (Minem) shared preliminary data on the total production of electric energy registered nationwide during 2024. In total, including Isolated Systems and the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), this amounted to 63,565 GWh, which meant an increase of 2.4% compared to the accumulated figure for 2023. The report entitled “Main indicators of the electricity sector at the national level” indicates that, of the total registered, 61,697 GWh (97%) was generated for the electricity market and 1,868 GWh (3%) was the amount of self-generated energy for the own use of the activities of industrial, mining, oil companies, among others. Regarding the sources of electricity generation, the report indicates that non-conventional renewable energy plants, such as wind and solar, from January to December 2024, registered 3,915 GWh and 1,263 GWh, respectively, equivalent in both cases to increases of around 66% and 32%, compared to what was produced in all of 2023. Hydroelectric plants accumulated 32,028 GWh during the course of 2024, while thermal units that only use natural gas as a resource produced 24,443 GWh, in the same period of time analyzed. By the end of 2024, national electricity generation with non-conventional renewable energy resources (RER) (solar, wind, bagasse and biogas) accumulated a production of 5,777 GWh, showing a significant increase (47%) over what was recorded in the same period of 2023, which was 3,922 GWh in the year to date. The main generating sources are hydraulic (61%), thermal (30%), wind (7%) and solar (2%). |
