The mayor of Rosario, Pablo Javkin, announced the launch of a project for the creation of a “Mega Police Station” in the city centre, with the aim of concentrating the activity of the security forces in a single space. In September, the local Executive will send to the Municipal Council a project for the transfer of the land necessary for its construction. The land for the mega-station would cover a large part of four blocks bordered by Av. Pellegrini, Zeballos, Suipacha and Ov. Lagos, where municipal offices and Penitentiary Unit No. 3 currently operate. The initiative seeks to replace the current system of detention in police stations, considered unsustainable, and offer a comprehensive solution to security in the city. The mayor stressed that the project is practically finished and that they hope to move forward with the ordinance for the transfer of the land in the coming months. “This structure, which is more than 100 years old and does not respond to current needs, is no longer suitable,” said Javkin in a conversation with the press. The completion of the project will require the relocation of various municipal departments and the prison located in the area. The debate on the relocation of Penitentiary Unit No. 3 is not new. For years, different options have been evaluated to move it outside the macrocenter of Rosario and free up a space with high real estate value. However, the new proposal aims to use the property to centralize the operations of the security forces, leaving aside the possibility of urbanization in the area. The Municipal Council will play a key role in defining the destination of these lands, since the Province of Santa Fe is the owner of the property. The councilors will be the ones to establish the uses and specifications of the new security complex. In this sense, previous projects, such as the one presented by Federico Lifschitz together with councilors Manuel Sciutto and Alicia Pino, had requested information on the possible relocation of the prison, setting a precedent for the current discussion. Both the municipality and the Ministry of Security are expected to finalize the details of the project before its formal submission to the corresponding legislative bodies, with the aim of advancing its implementation and modernizing the security system in Rosario.
