Area students have a new avenue to explore career options, thanks to like-minded educators. The Muskogee Area Education Consortium recently launched its collaborative project meant to help students, educators and parents learn more about area schools and career options. Muskogeecareers.org is a website produced by the MAEC partners — public and private — kindergarten through 12th grade, career tech, higher education, local businesses and industries in the Muskogee area. MAEC focuses on sponsoring events for students, recognizing outstanding teaching at all levels, and maintaining contact with legislators and the State Department of Education to advocate for sound educational policy, said Muskogee Public Schools Director of Secondary Education Melony Carey. The website is another way for the consortium to assist, not only area students, but educators and local employers, she said. Fort Gibson Superintendent Derald Glover described the website as an information tool to guide schools in the area through a menu of career preparation activities starting as early as elementary and moving through high school. It culminates with students creating a career portfolio to include a career-specific resume, interview experience, attendance awareness and career planning. Parents and children are able to access all of the information and search for opportunities in the region. “Many teachers are not aware that manufacturing and industry are the largest economic drivers in the Muskogee area,” Glover said. “This tool gives them ideas they can use in their classrooms to educate students on the career opportunities that are right here in Muskogee.” Students learn about viable options to stay in the region to go to college, career tech or straight into the workforce, something that local manufacturers are keen to see happen. Advantage Controls is pleased to be represented on this new website, said Dan Morris, president of Advantage Controls. To be successful in recruiting future team members, the first step is to educate them on the types of jobs available within our company, and this website helps us to do that. The website will continue to grow and improve, Glover said. “Muskogee Industrial Development just completed a strategic plan that this will fit into nicely,” he said. “It will be a key component for them to market business and industry in the region, educate and develop future employees.” One of the key features of the website is a database of area career opportunities, searchable by salary range, employer and industry type. The new website is a great tool to bring awareness to our area students regarding the various career opportunities available to them locally, said Eric Miller, director of the Port of Muskogee''s Industrial Development Office. The development of this website aligns perfectly with what we are seeking to accomplish through our workforce development initiative, as defined in our recently adopted strategic plan. |
