Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently announced that JSW and POSCO will jointly set up a ?40,000 crore mega steel plant in Keonjhar district’s Patna area. Addressing a public gathering in Champua, Majhi said he had long envisioned a steel plant for the district and was now in a position to fulfill that commitment. Beyond the Patna project, the CM revealed plans to develop steel industries across Keonjhar with a total investment exceeding ?1 lakh crore. The announcement follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on January 28 between JSW Group and the Odisha government during the ‘Utkarsh Odisha-Make in Odisha Conclave’ to establish a 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) steel plant in the district. In October last year, JSW and South Korean steel major POSCO had also signed an MoU to build an integrated steel plant in India with an initial capacity of 5 MTPA, though the exact location had not been disclosed. Additionally, Majhi announced a ?4 crore grant for the construction of a three-storey building at Chandra Sekhar College in Champua, following an earlier ?3.30 crore allocation by Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj for the college’s development. Earlier in the day, the CM inaugurated a five-day Regional Agricultural Machinery Fair in Keonjhar, highlighting the importance of agriculture in Odisha, where over 60% of the population depends on farming and allied activities. |
