Four bids were submitted for the construction of a new maximum security pavilion in Detention Unit No. 11 (U11) in Centenario. The project is part of a comprehensive plan aimed at doubling the accommodation capacity in the provinces penitentiary units. Framed within the Penitentiary Emergency Law enacted in March 2024, the construction of the pavilion has a one-year execution period and will cover an area of ??2,595 square meters. The infrastructure will include 25 individual cells with a toilet and an isolation cell. The companies that submitted bids for the tender were: Paledini Dinale Codam Bassa Constructions The prison infrastructure plan promoted by the provincial government seeks to address the shortage of prison places. Currently, there are 443 places available, while demand far exceeds that capacity, with 545 inmates sentenced in penitentiary units and 201 inmates housed in police stations. The initiative includes the creation of 416 new places through the construction of pavilions in U11 (Centenario), U22 (Cutral Co) and U32 (Zapala). This will allow for an 83.8% increase in penitentiary capacity, as well as adding educational, health and work modules to improve the reintegration of inmates. Currently, the maximum security pavilion in U11 is 43.9% complete. In addition, the construction of two medium security pavilions, with capacity for 148 inmates, is currently being tendered. This ambitious prison infrastructure plan represents the largest investment in the provinces penitentiary system in decades. |
