The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has successfully completed a vital flood mitigation structure along Peñaranda River, enhancing disaster resilience in Gapan City, Nueva Ecija. According to a report submitted to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller A. Tolentino said that the newly constructed flood mitigation structure – including a 312.40-meter double-berm system, a 10-meter-wide dike, and reinforced concrete slope protection, has significantly reduced the risk of flooding in the area. Prior to the project’s completion, residents of Barangay Pambuan experience frequent flooding, which disrupted daily life, damaged crops, and threatened livelihood due to rising water levels of the Peñaranda River especially during heavy rainfall and typhoons. “The completed flood control project not only safeguards the community but also ensures agricultural stability by preventing crop damage and boosting opportunities to fish farming,” Director Tolentino added. The project, implemented by the DPWH Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineering Office, was funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA) with a contract amount of P94.57-million. |
