Work Detail The Community of Madrid has officially awarded the contract for the extension of Metro Line 5, a project that will improve connectivity between the city and Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport. With an investment of EUR 180.9 million, construction will begin in spring 2025 and is expected to last 30 months. The 1.7-kilometre extension will connect Alameda de Osuna to the T1-T2-T3 stop on Metro Line 8, significantly improving access to the airport. A new interchange station will be constructed, featuring: Four platforms Two halls 5,000 square metres of floor space Lifts and escalators to enhance accessibility Metro Line 5, currently the fourth most-used line in Madrid’s metro network, carries more than 77 million passengers annually. The extension will provide an additional entry point to the airport and enhance connectivity between the northeast and southwest of the capital, serving 32 stations, including Gran Vía and Callao, while integrating with ten other metro lines. This infrastructure project, co-financed with European funds, is expected to benefit: The 66 million passengers who pass through Madrid-Barajas Airport annually The 40,000 employees and residents in the surrounding areas of Line 5 In parallel, the Madrid government has also approved a EUR 4.9 million contract aimed at enhancing comfort and safety on metro trains. The plan involves the inspection and repair of secondary suspension balloons on three train models (Series 6000, 8000, and 3000) that operate across multiple metro lines (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9A, 9B, 10B, 11, 12, and Ramal). These measures are designed to reduce vibrations felt by passengers, ensuring a smoother travel experience.
