Work Detail Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to explore opportunities in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sector. The MoU was signed during India Energy Week 2025 in the presence of Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, along with ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh, TPREL CEO and Managing Director Deepesh Nanda, and other dignitaries. The collaboration aims to identify and develop commercial opportunities across the BESS value chain, focusing on utility-scale systems, grid stabilization services, renewable energy integration, microgrids, hybrid energy solutions, industrial and commercial storage solutions, backup power, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and energy trading through ancillary services. Both companies intend to leverage their expertise to contribute to India’s energy transition and long-term energy security. Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director of TPREL, stated that the partnership with ONGC is a crucial step in advancing India’s clean energy transition. He highlighted the role of BESS in strengthening grid reliability, supporting renewable energy integration, and enabling a more sustainable energy future. Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and CEO of ONGC, emphasized ONGC’s commitment to clean energy initiatives and the importance of energy storage in ensuring grid stability. He noted that the collaboration with TPREL aligns with ONGC’s goal of strengthening India’s renewable energy adoption. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions. Both companies aim to support India’s renewable energy targets by advancing battery energy storage technologies. The collaboration comes at a time when India is increasing its focus on energy storage to manage renewable energy intermittency and enhance grid efficiency. TPREL recently achieved a major milestone by commissioning India’s largest solar and BESS project, a 100 MW solar PV plant with a 120 MWh utility-scale BESS in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. This project strengthens India’s green energy infrastructure and sets a benchmark for future BESS developments. The partnership between TPREL and ONGC is expected to drive further innovations in the energy storage sector, supporting the country’s transition to a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
