Work Detail | The World Bank Group’s Board of Executive Directors approved early September “US$18 million (i.e. 39.7 million Tunisian dinars) in additional financing to complete an environmentally safe wastewater disposal system considered critical for the protection of sensitive marine ecosystems off the coast of Tunisia.” According to a World Bank statement, “the new financing, part of the Northern Tunis Wastewater Project, is for the construction of a 6km submarine outfall, an underwater pipeline that will transport treated wastewater away from the shore for improved dispersal and dilution.” Along with the construction of critical infrastructure, the additional financing will support institutional capacity building, environmental and water quality monitoring systems, and the design of future projects for the ongoing national project of improving wastewater management. “The Northern Tunis Wastewater project, whose total cost is estimated at $ 60.6 million (133.8 MD), will contribute also to the reuse of wastewater for agriculture, by replacing fresh water in the irrigation perimeter of Borj Touil “. Approved in June 2010, the closing date of the Northern Tunis Wastewater Project is scheduled for the end of 2019. |
