The Iraqi Ministry of Industry and Minerals has secured government approval to establish a fully integrated phosphate fertilizer complex in Anbar and a sponge iron plant in Basra, marking what it describes as a major step in reviving the countrys strategic industries. According to a ministry statement, the Higher Committee for Reconstruction and Investment approved the projects during its February 9, 2025 meeting. The phosphate fertilizer complex, developed in partnership with a private sector company that met the highest evaluation standards, will produce 1 million tons of DAP fertilizer annually and 500,000 tons of triple superphosphate (TSP), along with sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and ammonia. This project aims to maximize Iraqs phosphate reserves and contribute to economic security. Additionally, the committee approved a sponge iron plant near Khor Al-Zubair Port in Basra, to be developed with a private sector partner that submitted the most competitive technical and financial offer. The plant will have a capacity of 1 million tons per year, supporting high-quality steel production and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Iraqs iron and steel industry. The Ministry emphasized that these approvals reflect the success of its investment strategy and its commitment to transparency and economic development. |
