Work Detail Spanish telecommunications company Teltronic has joined the MORANE-2 project (MObile radio for RAilway NEtwork in Europe 2), a collaborative effort aimed at testing the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) under real-world conditions. MORANE-2 plays a crucial role in enhancing the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), with a focus on increasing capacity, accelerating digitalisation, and improving the competitiveness of passenger and freight rail transport. Over the next 34 months, the project will assess and refine technological specifications to ensure they are market-ready. FRMCS solutions will be tested in three European laboratories and across five railway corridors. With the GSM-R system expected to become obsolete by 2030, implementing FRMCS is a priority to maintain and advance railway communications. As part of the project, Teltronic will deploy its MCX (Mission Critical Services) dispatching system, NG CeCoCo, which will facilitate essential voice communications, including driver-to-driver and driver-to-controller interactions, group calls, and railway emergency calls (REC). The system will undergo both laboratory testing and real-world trials on two railway sections—one conventional and one high-speed—provided by ADIF. Co-financed by Europe’s Rail (EU-RAIL) and the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertakings (SNS JUs), the €13.5 million project will validate the latest FRMCS specifications developed by the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA). The initiative aims to establish clear, implementation-ready specifications for the sector. The new FRMCS system will ensure the continued operation of essential railway signalling applications and voice communications while enabling additional services such as Automated Train Operation (ATO), data and video transmission, and other critical applications with improved quality, flexibility, and capacity. Collaboration is central to MORANE-2, bringing together infrastructure managers, technology providers, and regulatory bodies under the coordination of the UIC to ensure alignment across the sector. “As a company committed to standardisation and interoperability, we are delighted to contribute to designing the next-generation railway communication system in Europe. This project highlights the power of innovation and collaboration, supporting a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable railway network,” said Raquel Frisa, Product Management Director and MORANE-2 Project Leader at Teltronic.
