Luminous Power Technologies has announced the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities with a new production facility for lead-acid batteries in North India. The plant, located in the SIDCUL Industrial Estate in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, spans eight acres and is expected to increase the company’s capacity to meet the growing demand for power storage solutions in both domestic and international markets. The facility will produce 1.5-2 GWh of power backup solutions annually, reinforcing Luminous’ position as a leader in the energy sector. The Haridwar plant is designed to follow global sustainability standards, featuring a rooftop solar installation with 3,036 panels generating 1 MW of power. It is the second-largest industrial solar rooftop installation in Uttarakhand, reflecting Luminous’ commitment to green energy. The unit also incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies, including the industry’s first green positive plate manufacturing system, which uses 100% grey oxide through a wet paste filling process for industrial batteries. Additionally, the plant features an acid circulation system and an automatic battery assembly line that operates at twice the speed of conventional lines. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge automation and a smart factory interface. It includes real-time stock monitoring, digital dashboards displaying live production data, and a specialized learning center called DOJO to train employees at all levels. A new lead-acid and alternative chemistry laboratory has also been established within the facility to support research and development in sustainable energy solutions. Luminous has also focused on operational efficiency by adopting a LEAN layout to ensure consistent product quality and faster production cycles. The plant has received multiple certifications, including Quality Management System (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management, and Energy Management Systems certification from the British Standards Institution. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has also recognized the facility for its exemplary environmental practices. Speaking on the expansion, Preeti Bajaj, MD & CEO of Luminous Power Technologies, emphasized the company’s commitment to adapting to evolving energy needs in India. She highlighted the importance of making energy affordable and accessible while incorporating advanced automation to enhance efficiency and create local job opportunities. Amlan Kanti Das, Head of Battery Technology at Luminous, also shared his views on the new facility. He stated that the plant’s advanced automation will help optimize production processes and ensure consistent quality. He added that the expansion will allow Luminous to scale up production to meet the rising demand for energy storage solutions in India and abroad. As part of its sustainability efforts, Luminous has adopted 100% green manufacturing practices for plate processing and is focused on bridging the energy demand-supply gap, especially in rural and semi-urban areas facing frequent power shortages. The company plans to continue expanding its production capacity to meet India’s growing energy needs. With this new manufacturing unit, Luminous aims to strengthen its leadership in power storage solutions while contributing to India’s clean energy transition. The facility is expected to generate employment, drive innovation, and support the country’s goal of energy sustainability. |
