Chinese company Ganfeng Lithium will open this month its new lithium chloride production plant in the industrial park of General Güemes, Salta. It will become the third to operate in the province, after Sal de Oro and Centenario, which have been in operation since last year. Argentine President Javier Milei received lithium businessmen. Chinese company Ganfeng Lithium has announced the imminent launch of its lithium chloride production plant in the General Güemes industrial park, Salta. The new facility, which will be located in the centre of the northern province, has the capacity to produce 20,000 tonnes of lithium chloride per year, with a project that includes the construction of the countrys first autonomous solar park, with 120 MW of generation in solar panels and 288 MW of storage in batteries of its own manufacture. Ganfeng Lithium estimates an investment in the project of around 600 million dollars, in addition to the creation of approximately 3,000 direct and indirect jobs through its operations in Salta. The lithium chloride production process will include transporting brine from the Salar del Llullaillaco to the plant in Güemes. To do this, it is planned to build a railway station that will facilitate the transfer of the material necessary for production. The plant has been designed to minimize its environmental impact, with a focus on the reuse of resources and zero liquid effluents. This plant joins those already in operation in the province. In October of last year, the Sal de Oro project was inaugurated by the mining company Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO), also in the General Güemes Industrial Park in the city of Salta. It is estimated that it will produce 25 thousand tons of lithium hydroxide per year, and it is presented as the first commercial plant of its kind in the country. In December, French miner Eramet announced the production of lithium carbonate at its Centenario plant , the first facility in the country to implement direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology on an industrial scale, it says, designed to extract and produce 24,000 t/year of battery-grade lithium carbonate. Today, Argentine President Javier Milei welcomed the CEO of Lithium Americas, Sam Piggot, and the CEO of Ganfeng, Wang Xiaoshen, to discuss the future of the lithium industry in Argentina. |
