Work Detail Avangrid, Inc., a top energy company and part of the Iberdrola Group, has signed a short-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP). Under this agreement, AMP will buy a portion of the electricity generated by Avangrid’s Blue Creek project in Ohio. This deal helps ensure that Blue Creek continues to provide reliable energy while also benefiting rural Ohio communities through jobs, lease payments, and tax revenue. Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO, said “Blue Creek is one of Avangrid’s largest operating assets and remains a fixture in the local community. It has delivered significant economic benefits in the 13 years since the project became operational, and I look forward to seeing that carry forward. We are happy to work with AMP on this deal, a trusted and longstanding customer, and to see Blue Creek continue to power homes and businesses throughout the region.” Pam Sullivan, AMP COO and AMP Transmission President, stated “At AMP, we aim to provide our Members with a cost-effective, diversified power supply resource mix. This agreement with Avangrid helps to diversify our power supply portfolio and insulate our participating Member utilities from the volatility of the wholesale energy market. We are pleased to have reached this agreement and look forward to a continued productive relationship with Avangrid.” AMP is a nonprofit organization that supplies wholesale power and services to more than 130 members across nine states. Its members get electricity from a mix of sources, including AMP’s own facilities, member-owned plants, and wholesale power purchases. Together, AMP’s members provide power to around 650,000 customers. Avangrid partners with utilities and municipalities across the Midwest to supply locally generated power. It works with 15 utilities and municipalities in the region, delivering 1.3 GW of electricity from 17 energy projects—enough to power about 330,000 homes. These projects also support over 100 local jobs for technicians who maintain operations year-round. Located in Van Wert and Paulding Counties, Blue Creek is a 304 MW wind power project that has been serving Northwest Ohio since 2012. During construction, it created over 500 jobs, with most equipment sourced from states like Wisconsin, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and North Dakota. Today, Blue Creek generates enough electricity to power about 76,000 homes annually. For over a decade, Blue Creek has contributed to the local economy, supporting 18 full-time operations and maintenance jobs and providing about $3 million each year in lease payments to landowners. The project has also paid over $30 million in property taxes, funding essential public services. Blue Creek was recently highlighted in Avangrid’s EMPOWERED video series, showcasing its positive impact on the community, including support for restoring a historic opera house in Van Wert. While Blue Creek is Avangrid’s only operating energy facility in Ohio, the company is building the Powell Creek solar farm nearby. Avangrid operates more than 75 energy projects nationwide, with over 9 GW of installed capacity across 22 states.
