The works to extend the Mendoza Metrotramway have exceeded 30% progress, with a pace of execution that exceeds initial expectations. The extension includes both the northern section, towards the Airport, and the southern section, up to Luján de Cuyo, which will make Mendoza the second city in the country with a rail connection to its air terminal. Awarded in May 2023 to the construction company CEOSA, the works began in the last quarter of that year. According to the provincial government, 70% of the columns needed for the expansion have already been installed. In Stage III (section to the Airport), excavations and construction of substations and technical premises have begun, while in Stage IV (towards Luján de Cuyo) the dismantling of old tracks and the relocation of freight train rails have been completed. In addition, the new Metrotranvía workshop, located at the Gutiérrez station, is already 35% complete. The Government stressed that advance planning made it possible to acquire all the necessary rails in 2023, ensuring progress without delays. The work is financed with provincial funds and the placement of green bonds, within the limit authorized by the Legislature in 2023. The project covers a 16 km extension between the Pellegrini bus stop and Luján de Cuyo, including the construction of a pedestrian walkway and a bicycle path, and a 6 km extension from the Avellaneda bus stop to the Airport. These improvements will transform the Metrotranvía into a 40 km long network, significantly expanding its reach within the metropolitan area. With this expansion, Mendoza joins Neuquén and Buenos Aires as one of the few Argentine cities with electric urban rail transport to its airport. However, this push for electric mobility contrasts with the recent dismantling of the citys trolleybus network, leaving only Córdoba and Rosario with systems of this type in operation. |
