Work Detail Transgrid has entered into a commercial agreement with the NSW Government, Australia, for the Hunter Transmission Project. Other than the supply of affordable electricity, the latest signed deal with Transgrid will also align New South Wales with their clean energy transition plan. Project factsheet Name: Hunter Transmission Project Client: The Energy Corporation of New South Wales (EnergyCo) Contractors: Transgrid, Downer Utility, Acciona-Genus JV, Gamuda, Seymour Whyte, UGL, CPB Contractors Utility: Clean energy transition Previous completed stages: Early engagements and Field and Technical studies Current stage: Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to be lodged mid-2025 Start of construction: Around 2026 Start of operation: By 2028 Hunter Transmission Project (HTP) The recent closures of coal-run power stations gave birth to the HTP. Also termed as “one of the state’s most critical energy projects”, it is expected to secure NSW energy security. The NSW clean energy project will link up Upper Hunter and Lower Hunter with around 100 km of transmission line. Running between Bayswater and Olney, the above-ground-500kV transmission lines will connect to the existing state’s transmission lines. This connection will close up to a “ring of transmission infrastructure”, fostering the backbone of the state’s energy demands. Also important to note is that the Hunter Transmission Project will specifically allow for the connection to the Central West Orana and New England Renewable Economic Zone (RZE) via Upper Hunter. Transgrid, other contractors, and the Hunter Transmission Project Delivery, operations and maintenance of the Hunter transmission line will be handled by Transgrid. Also featuring in the project are UGL Engineering, Downer Utility, among others (mentioned above) who will work on the transmission lines and the substations. More numbers to the HTP include the 230 transmission towers to be installed at strategic locations between the Bayswater and Olney stretch. Also in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to be released mid-2025 are the proposed transmission tower locations. The towers standing between 75m and 85m high, and between 400m to 700m apart are a key aspect being looked at in the EIS. Also included in the development plans are 2 switching stations. The Hunter Transmission Project has also been revered “critical”, with commitment to its delivery a priority. All this is to “unlock reliable energy supply to power the state,” as put by EnergyCo CEO Hannah McCaughey.
