Work Detail This July, Dubai-based master developer Nakheel floated four tenders for security services across its developments. The first tender is for the provision of security services for Discovery Gardens, The Gardens, Garden View Villas, Garden Apartments, and Jebel Ali Village master communities.

The second tender calls for security services at International City and Warsan Village master communities, while the other two invites focus on the Al Furjan and Masakin Al Furjan, and Palm Jumeirah developments. Clearly, the market for security providers – and technologies – looks set for regional growth as property classes evolve and demand specialised services.

Over and above

This April, International Air Transport Association (IATA) stated that Middle East is expected to transport 237 million passengers a year by 2034. Accordingly, a report by Frost & Sullivan estimated that the global annual spend on airport security will increase to $12.67bn by 2023, up from $8.22bn reported in 2014.

In November 2015, Paul Baker, managing director of Smiths Detection’s Middle East operations told the organisers of Intersec that among the key drivers of aviation security is the increase of passenger traffic numbers in the region: “The increase in the number of global air passengers, particularly in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions, have played a key role in driving investments in airport security infrastructures.”

Security education and training for the aviation sector also form a key component of the industry’s regional boom. This June, Egypt’s National Falcon picked Restrata to provide security training services for its airports.

National Falcon is the agency tasked with providing the aviation security screening force for Egypt’s international airports, including those in areas like Cairo and Sharm el-Sheikh. Restrata is a British-owned outfit headquartered in the UAE, with operations in Iraq and Qatar.

Under the contract, the company will deliver a six-month training programme to National Falcon personnel who have been tasked by the Ministry of Civil Aviation to provide security at airports across Egypt.

Both firms also signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on establishing a training academy that will support their partnership.

Remarking on the contract, British Ambassador John Casson said: “The UK and Egypt stand together on the frontline against terrorism and aviation security is a top priority for both our governments. We have a strong partnership when it comes to working on aviation security, no more so than in Sharm el-Sheikh, where we are working to restart flights as quickly as possible.”

Access control

Across all property sectors, however, it is altogether likely that a combined approach will be required to suit future market trends as security hardware is upgraded to meet the needs of advanced surveillance programmes.

Integrated security services are expected to be highly demanded as the region prepares to host mega events such as Dubai Expo 2020 and 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.

Furthermore, the evolution of local property designs is also absorbing the access control functionalities of building components such as doors, windows, and locks. In response, regional door manufacturers are calibrating their product designs to match access control requirements.

This April, Juan Vela, regional director at Dorma+kaba, told Construction Week that demand for GPRS-equipped doors is also on the rise in the Middle East: “We have seen the world changing from mechanical hardware to electronic smart home solutions.

“A growing trend in door solution technologies is the need for consumers to be able to access their homes through applications on their smartphones.

“To cater to these needs, Dorma+kaba now offers the Mobile Key Access solution that is entirely available on mobile platforms,” Vela continued.

“The need for GPRS-enabled door solutions like Dorvision takes access solutions into the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing complete security to inhabitants with real-time data analysis and monitoring of access while enabling proactive maintenance.

“Exivo is also one of our Cloud-based solutions that provides access control.

“Dorvision really takes the cake in this economy, as cloud computing is no longer a tech-solution, but an every-man power that allows users to configure their access control systems without the help of software specialists and analysts. Eventually, the region is looking for smart, easy, affordable and timeless access solutions,” Vela concluded.
