Engie Chile has announced that it has obtained authorization from the National Electric Coordinator (CEN). The energy storage system facility is located in the Antofagasta region. Engie Chile, the local subsidiary of French energy company Engie, has announced that it has obtained authorization from the National Electric Coordinator (CEN) for the commercial operation of the 68 MW/418 MWh Tamaya BESS storage system, located in Tocopilla, Antofagasta region. The peculiarity is that BESS Tamaya is located where the companys former diesel plant once operated, thus giving the site a new lease of life. Through 152 containers, this park stores the energy generated by the Tamaya Solar Plant (114 MW) , also owned by the company. Tamaya, which deploys 551,000 solar panels, began injecting into the grid in December 2021 , and in February 2022 began its commercial operation. Engie Chile also ensures that BESS Tamaya will be able to provide enough clean energy to supply 50,800 homes in Chile during the 5 hours of greatest demand in the National Electric System. In March 2024 , BESS Coya (139 MW/638 MWh) began commercial operations and the company is currently building two energy storage projects: BESS Tocopilla (116 MW/660 MWh) , which is located where the old coal-fired units of the Tocopilla Thermal Complex operated; and BESS Capricornio (48 MW/264 MWh) . Once all of them are operational, Engie Chile will have an installed capacity of 2 GWh in this type of technology. |
