The Union Budget for fiscal year 2025-26 has earmarked ?6,626 crore for railway projects in Tamil Nadu, a slight increase from the ?6,326 crore allocated in 2024-25. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the budgetary outlay for Tamil Nadus rail development in 2025-26 is 7.5 times higher than the average outlay of ?879 crore allocated between 2009 and 2014. Currently, 22 railway projects spanning 2,587 km, with a total cost of ?33,467 crore, are underway in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, 77 railway stations are undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Station Scheme at an estimated cost of ?2,948 crore. The minister also noted that 601 works for the commissioning of Kavach Safety systems are in progress at a sanctioned cost of ?1,460 crore. Tamil Nadu has also made significant strides in railway electrification, with 2,242 km of railway tracks electrified—covering nearly 94% of the total tracks. For Kerala, the budgetary outlay for rail development projects in 2025-26 stands at ?3,042 crore, an increase to eight times the average outlay of ?372 crore from 2009-2014. In Kerala, eight railway projects covering 419 km and costing ?12,350 crore are currently in progress. Additionally, 35 railway stations in the state are being redeveloped under the Amrit Station Scheme at an estimated cost of ?2,560 crore. |
