Work Detail Latest batch of supply deals include the tech giant’s first in Portugal for 219MW Amazon and Iberdrola have added 476MW of renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) to their global renewable energy partnership. The latest batch include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal for 219MW from the Tamega Wind Complex, scheduled to begin construction in early 2025. The partnership has also expanded into Spain, with two utility-scale PPAs agreed for a total of 257MW of solar and wind energy. The three projects are equivalent to 1093GWh of carbon-free electricity per year. Tamega Wind Complex is the largest green hybridisation project in the country, designed to make efficient use of the grid connection point already built at the Tamega hydroelectric complex. Iberdrola is investing around €350m in the 274MW project that will create over 700 jobs at the peak of construction. Amazon will purchase 212MW capacity at the Ciudad Rodrigo solar plant in Salamanca, in western Spain. # Iberdrola has committed €200m to the project, which will create more than 800 during peak construction periods. As part of the project, Iberdrola has made a commitment to Ciudad Rodrigo municipality to support restoration of the Plaza Amayuelas town square to make it once again a space for the whole community to enjoy. Additionally, the output from the 50MW from the Valdemoro wind farm located in the province of Burgos, will be purchased. The project is made up of 11 wind turbines, with a height of 107.5 metres and a rotor diameter of 145 metres. During peak construction the project will support 145 jobs, around 40% will be drawn from local contractors. The commitment to securing renewable energy PPAs helps Amazon match the electricity consumed by its operations with 100% renewable energy, as part of its goal reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. With more than 600 solar and wind projects globally, Amazon is the worlds (and Spains) largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy according to Bloomberg NEF for the fifth year running. Iberdrola has been announced as the top seller of PPAs in Europe for a second consecutive year, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report. Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President Customer Business at Iberdrola, said: “With Amazon we have a partnership that truly matches our own commitment to develop sustainable energy and drive the energy transition forward around the world. “With Iberdrola’s extensive global portfolio of renewables, we are continually seeking to expand such partnerships, to accelerate decarbonisation and support businesses in reaching their climate goals.” Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, said: “Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals, and support Europes transition to more sustainable energy sources.” In August 2024, Iberdrola selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider for generative artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, as part of their global collaboration. Iberdrola’s renewables business is optimising its wind farm design process by leveraging the compute power of the AWS Cloud to simulate wake effects and further improve the layout of wind turbines. Iberdrola is also using AWS’ high performance computing to improve weather forecasting simulations performance across its 400 wind farms globally.
