PT PLN (Persero)’s Green as a Service (GEAS) Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is witnessing surging demand, with customer adoption reaching 7,354 in 2024—an increase of 117% from 3,378 customers in the previous year. The REC service allows businesses to obtain internationally recognized certification for their use of renewable energy, providing transparency and accountability. Each certificate validates that the electricity consumption per megawatt hour (MWh) originates from verified green energy sources. Rapid Growth in Green Energy Adoption PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo highlighted that REC serves as a reliable and cost-effective solution for industries seeking clean energy to enhance their competitiveness.“As the backbone of Indonesia’s renewable energy transition, PLN is committed to providing 100% green electricity to businesses and industries through REC. Our process is designed to be fast and accessible to meet rising corporate demand,” he said. Since its launch in 2020, REC sales have grown significantly, reaching 10.99 terawatt hours (TWh) by 2024. Of this, 5.38 TWh—roughly 49% of total sales—was achieved in 2024 alone, marking a 52% year-on-year (YoY) increase from 3.54 TWh in 2023. Corporate Leaders Driving Adoption Major corporations are among the leading users of PLN’s REC, with companies such as Nike, PT Cheil Jedang Indonesia, PT Asahimas Chemical, PT Agincourt Resources, PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk, PT Air Liquide Indonesia, PT South Pacific Viscose, PT Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo, PT Smelting, and PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia collectively consuming 2.81 TWh—52% of total REC usage in 2024. Darmawan expects this upward trend to continue, with more businesses turning to PLN’s green electricity services. Power Plants Supporting REC Currently, PLN operates eight power plants supplying green energy to REC customers, including geothermal and hydroelectric facilities: Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) Ulubelu PLTP Lahendong PLTP Ulumbu PLTP Cirata Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) Bakaru PLTA Orya Genyem PLTA Lambur Mini-Hydro Power Plant (PLTM) International Certification Standards PLN’s REC is backed by the APX Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGRs) tracking system from the United States, ensuring compliance with international renewable energy standards. “REC guarantees the use of renewable energy transparently and is internationally recognized. We remain optimistic about the continued growth of this green electricity service,” Darmawan concluded. |
