Work Detail A flood control project completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) now protects communities in Barangay Antonino, Labason, Zamboanga del Norte. Built along the estuary or the downstream of Labason River where the river meets the sea, the project involved the construction of a 211.4-meter steel sheet pile river wall with concrete copping, including the installation of solar street LED lights as a safety feature. DPWH Region 9 Director Cayamombao D. Dia said that the concrete structure now benefits residents, which consists of mostly fishing communities. “The river wall now serves as their first line of defense during high tides, storm surge, and inclement weather, safeguarding their livelihood against damages brought by natural calamities,” said Director Dia. Prior to the project’s completion, there were reports of incidents where some houses on the riverside were driven away by raging flood waters. With the river wall, nearby lands are now protected from soil erosion brought by flooding, ensuring the safety of properties and homes in the area. The Labason River Flood Control Project was implemented by Zamboanga del Norte 3rd District Engineering Office in the amount of P34.3 million.
