Work Detail The project is set to generate 30MW of emissions-free baseload power upon completion of the first two phases. DEEP Earth Energy Production has partnered global energy technology company SLB to advance the development of Canada’s inaugural geothermal project in southeast Saskatchewan. With its feasibility phase now concluded, the project is expected to generate 30MW of emissions-free, baseload power upon completion of its first two phases. The initial 5MW phase is set for full commissioning by 2026, with a staged expansion targeting 180MW of renewable power generation. SLB will provide engineering design and integrated well construction services for phases one and two of the project, which includes the development of two production wells and two injection wells in phase one and up to 18 wells in phase two. The approach will harness the natural permeability of the sedimentary rock formation, facilitating the reliable, cost-effective, and more sustainable production of geothermal energy. Despite Canada’s extensive geothermal potential, the resource has largely remained untapped due to the economic and technical challenges associated with traditional extraction methods. DEEP’s geothermal project will draw on proven oil and gas field development methods, using advanced horizontal drilling to reach the most productive zones and applying production enhancement technologies to optimise geothermal energy output. DEEP president and CEO Kirsten Marcia stated: “We are thrilled to welcome SLB as a key partner in this transformative project, which also includes Ormat as part of an integrated geothermal asset development model. “By joining forces, we are developing our asset in a streamlined fashion, combining the best of subsurface and surface technologies, while maximising efficiencies, operations and ultimately, power output.” SLB renewables and energy efficiency vice-president Irlan Amir stated: “This collaboration with DEEP reflects our commitment to broadening the adoption of geothermal by reducing project risk and accelerating the time to first power. “The project’s innovative engineering design and integrated asset development model brings together developers, technology providers and infrastructure partners to open new frontiers for geothermal power generation in Canada and beyond.”
