As Africa’s mining industry faces growing pressure to decarbonize, companies across the continent are increasingly adopting renewable energy solutions. These initiatives aim to reduce operational costs, achieve sustainability goals, and comply with changing global regulations. Renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and hydropower, are becoming essential for mining operations in Angola, Zambia, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), setting a new standard for the sector’s future. Trafigura’s 2,000 MW Green Energy Initiative In a major development, global commodities trader Trafigura, engineering firm ProMarks, and the Angolan government have partnered to create a 2,000 MW high-voltage electricity interconnector. Announced in July 2024, the project will transport renewable energy, primarily from hydropower projects in northern Angola, to meet the growing demand from mining companies in Zambia and the DRC. It will also feed into the Southern Africa Power Pool regional grid, enhancing regional power distribution. First Quantum’s $500 Million Investment in Zambia’s Renewable Energy Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals is investing $500 million in a 430 MW renewable energy project aimed at powering its Kansanshi and Sentinel mines in Zambia. The project, developed in partnership with Total Eren and Chariot, includes a 230 MW solar PV plant and a 200 MW wind farm. Set for completion in 2026 and 2027, respectively, the initiative is expected to reduce First Quantum’s carbon footprint by 30% by 2025. Tronox Holdings’ 400 MW Renewable Energy Partnership in South Africa In South Africa, mining and chemicals company Tronox Holdings has secured over 400 MW of renewable energy through agreements with NOA Group and Sola Group. The renewable energy projects, slated for commissioning by 2027, will provide 70% of the energy needs for Tronox’s mining and smelting operations, cutting the company’s carbon footprint by 25% compared to 2019 levels. The capacity includes a 200 MW solar power plant from Sola Group and additional energy from NOA Group, generating 497 GWh annually. CMOC’s 200 MW Hydropower and Solar Project in the DRC Chinese mining firm CMOC has partnered with Lualaba Power to develop a 200 MW hydropower and floating solar project in the DRC. Announced in July 2024, the Nzilo II project will provide CMOC with both base load and peak power to support its copper production goals of 800,000 to 1 million tons annually by 2028. Northam’s 180 MW Solar Farm in South Africa In August 2024, Northam Platinum Group Metals signed a power purchase agreement to build a 180 MW solar farm for its Zondereinde mine in South Africa. The plant, which will generate 220 GWh annually, will meet 15% of the mine’s energy needs and significantly reduce its carbon emissions. These ambitious renewable energy projects are setting the stage for a transformation in Africa’s mining industry, providing a model for decarbonization and contributing to the continent’s wider energy transition. As more companies invest in renewable energy, the sector is positioning itself as a key player in global sustainability efforts. |
