Work Detail Tata Motors, in partnership with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), is set to pioneer the use of hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) technology in India’s transport sector. The pilot project, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will commence this quarter, marking a significant step toward adopting green hydrogen as a sustainable fuel. The pilot will span 12-18 months, focusing on gathering data about product performance and the hydrogen refueling infrastructure needed to support commercial operations. Trial runs will take place on three key routes: Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, and Mumbai-Pune. A senior Tata Motors executive highlighted that the project aims to evaluate the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered trucks and refueling infrastructure. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicles division, stated, Tata Motors is the first OEM to receive a government allocation for a hydrogen pilot. This experiment will not only test the vehicles but also help develop hydrogen refueling infrastructure, paving the way for long-distance trucking with green hydrogen. As part of the initiative, 15 hydrogen-powered trucks will be deployed across the three routes, with IOC setting up refueling stations at its outlets to support the pilot. Showcasing Hydrogen Innovation At the recently concluded Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi, Tata Motors unveiled the Tata Prima H.28, India’s first hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle equipped with a cutting-edge four-cylinder H2ICE engine and a range of 550 kilometers. The event also featured 14 smart commercial vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), six intelligent solutions for real-time performance insights, and various powertrain options, including diesel, biodiesel, CNG, LNG, ethanol, battery electric, and hydrogen. CV Sales Recovery Outlook On the commercial vehicle market, Wagh noted that Tata Motors expects sales to recover by FY26. He observed mixed performance in 2025, with strong sales in Q1 followed by a dip in Q2 due to adverse weather conditions impacting mining and consumption. We’re optimistic about Q4, expecting it to remain flat on a year-on-year basis, Wagh added. This initiative positions Tata Motors and IOC at the forefront of India’s green mobility transition, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and infrastructure development.
