Metrolinx announced that the GO Transit Network Operations Centre (NOC) has officially been awarded LEED Gold certification in green building leadership. The NOC is at the heart of GO Transit’s daily operations, closely monitoring the entire GO network around the clock. The NOC ensures GO Transit services run safely and reliably while supporting rapid responses for any issues that arise on the network. The NOC was constructed with sustainability at the forefront of its design. Recycled materials were used on the project including concrete and steel. Regional manufacturing was favoured in the design and most wood used on the project achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. Notably, over 75 per cent of construction waste was diverted from landfills and recycled. The centre’s thoughtful and efficient design has resulted in a 41 per cent energy cost reduction as compared to similar structures built to American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards. Features at the NOC include: A white roof that supports the reduction of local heat island effects. Electrochromic glass which can adjust its transparency to moderate heat and light, further reducing overall energy use. Native and drought-tolerant vegetation to reduce the need for water on-site while adding to the local greenscape. Low flow plumbing fixtures that support a more than 30 per cent reduction in portable water use. Low volatile organic compounds selected for their quality and friendliness to the health of humans and the environment. |
