Work Detail Meta has announced a deal to purchase 200MW of solar energy from multinational utility Engie, further expanding its renewable energy portfolio, which already exceeds 12GW. The solar farm will be located near one of Meta’s data centres in Texas and is expected to be operational by 2025. The agreement comes amid a surge in demand for power as tech companies scale up AI development and data centre construction. Reports suggest that by 2027, half of all new AI servers could face power shortages. Meta is also exploring nuclear energy, recently inviting proposals for 1 to 4GW of nuclear power capacity to be available by the early 2030s. Other tech firms are making similar moves: Google is partnering with Kairos for 500MW of small modular nuclear reactors by 2030, while Amazon has signed a 300MW deal with X-Energy for deployment in the early 2030s. Despite the attention on nuclear, renewable energy sources continue to rapidly expand. Google, for instance, is supporting a $20bn renewable deal with Intersect Power and TPG Rise, while Microsoft is collaborating with Acadia Infrastructure Capital on a $9bn renewable project. The speed of renewable deployment remains a significant advantage over nuclear. As Meta’s chief renewable effort demonstrates, solar and wind power can quickly support the immediate energy needs of the tech industry.
