The Rural Electrification Program for Isolated Areas (PERLA) will allow more than 1,100 households in the Brus Laguna municipality, Gracias a Dios department, to benefit from a microgrid based on a 550 kW solar plant starting in 2023. The Rural Electrification Program for Isolated Areas (PERLA), launched by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in 2018, has enabled the installation of a photovoltaic microgrid in a rural area of ??Honduras, benefiting 1,100 households. One of the challenges facing the country is access to electricity. The IDB reports that in 2005 only 52% of the population was connected to the grid, while by 2013 this figure had reached 81%. Today, it is stated that with national resources and international cooperation, the country has achieved full access to energy for 87% of its inhabitants, according to the annual statistical report of the electrical subsector. A case study is the one that occurred in Mosquitia, an isolated region of the Central American country, with abundant forests and where indigenous communities such as Miskito, Mayangna, Garifuna, Pech and Tawakha live. There, in the municipality of Brus Laguna, department of Gracias a Dios, a photovoltaic microgrid was installed in July 2023, consisting of a 550 kW plant, a battery energy storage system, the expansion of the electrical substation and interconnection with the distribution network. The facility has had a significant impact on socioeconomic development, the IDB says, with support for social areas such as education, health and security, both by providing night lighting and by allowing the health center to have facilities that ensure the cold chain of, for example, vaccines. This is also the case for promoting the implementation of productive projects that use energy, from businesses to food processing centres and fishing refrigeration. |
