The disruption is necessary to carry out essential maintenance on the distribution power lines Power utility Eskom has planned a nine-hour power outage for some parts of Soweto, Gauteng, on Tuesday, 21 January. Eskom said this disruption is necessary to carry out essential maintenance on the distribution power lines. The outage is set to occur between 9am and 6pm, with power being interrupted in areas such as Jabulani, Mofolo North (Sgodiphola) and Zondi. “Eskom apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by this maintenance. Should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated.” Meanwhile, City Power has disconnected over 120 newly installed by-passed prepaid meters at the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) flats in Kliptown Square on Wednesday, 15 January. In a statement released, the City said this is in response to the illegal bypassing of the newly installed prepaid meters. “After receiving a tip-off from residents regarding meter tampering following the normalisation process during the Token Identifier (TID) rollover project in November last year, City Power’s Revenue Protection team, supported by law enforcement agencies, disconnected power supply to over 120 housing units with bypassed prepaid meters. “The meters affected were removed by our technical team, along with the circuit breakers, ensuring that these customers do not illegally reconnect their power supply. Penalties have also been imposed on the customers who tampered with their meters, with a fine of more than R14,000 for single-phase connections. However, penalties can potentially exceed R30,000 for houses with three-phase connections to replace a tampered meter,” City Power said. Stern warning for residents who tamper with their meters “The City said the operation served as a stern warning to those who continue to bypass their meters within our supply areas. “City Power has previously warned customers about the consequences of meter tampering, yet some individuals continue to engage in this illegal activity. We want to make it clear that City Power will no longer tolerate this behaviour.” In Cape Town, the City of Cape Town’s (CoCT) Electricity Generation and Distribution Department has reminded residents of critical infrastructure upgrades scheduled for Observatory, Salt River, and parts of Woodstock on Friday, 24 January 2025, or on Friday, 7 February 2025, depending on weather conditions. The City said this will interrupt electricity supply. The work will be carried out overnight on Friday, 24 January 2025, from 8pm to 8am on Saturday, 25 January. The City said, depending on the weather conditions, the work could be rescheduled to take place on Friday, 7 February 2025. |
