Work Detail TCN says vandals are posing a major threat to its grid expansion plans Vandals continue to lay siege to the electricity infrastructure in Nigeria, with several transmission towers damaged in recent weeks and the Presidential Villa in Abuja left in darkness over the past weekend following cable theft. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed today (20 January) “that over 18 transmission towers were vandalised between January 9 and 14, 2025, across Rivers, Abia, and Kano States.” Last July, ESI Africa reported that TCN spent more than N5 billion (around $3.1 million) to repair or replace damaged electricity equipment in the preceding five months. In 2023, the transmission company confirmed that vandals destroyed 109 transmission towers over nine months across the country. TCN said its grid expansion plans are under tremendous strain due to the persistent vandalism of its installations.
