Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy, along with senior engineers and technical consultants, conducted an inspection of the Metro Rail corridors to Medchal and Shamirpet on Sunday to address technical issues in the alignment, according to a press release by HAML. One of the key challenges identified was the steep curvature along the road from Paradise to Bowenpally, near the airport boundary. Following the insistence of Airport authorities, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) decided to route the elevated corridor under the Begumpet airport runway (Tadbund/Bowenpally side) for about 600 meters via a tunnel. However, transitioning the Metro rail from a high double-elevation to a tunnel and back to an elevated structure would present significant engineering difficulties. To resolve these challenges and create a world-class integrated Metro hub at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS), Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy suggested combining the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridors initially, before splitting them into separate routes for Medchal and Shamirpet. The HAML MD and his team inspected several roads in the Cantonment area to identify the best possible alignment. The roads assessed included JBS-Secunderabad Club Road, Staff Road, Mudfort Road, Tivoli Junction, and several others. During the inspection, Reddy directed the team to evaluate the pros and cons of various routes, ensuring minimal disruption to residential areas, private property acquisition, and the need to take the alignment underground under the airport. The inspection found that combining both Metro corridors at JBS would avoid the tunnel complications and allow the alignment to join at the NH junction near Bowenpally, where Metro pillars and viaducts could be constructed on the existing service road median. This solution would also create a seamless 60 km Metro link from Medchal to the airport. For the JBS-Shamirpet Metro alignment, it was determined feasible to extend it directly from the existing first Metro pillar near Secunderabad Club as a double-elevated structure over the proposed HMDA elevated corridor on the Karimnagar Highway. The MD also revealed plans to develop JBS into a major Metro hub, serving Secunderabad, northern Hyderabad, and nearby northern Telangana districts. Approximately 30 acres of land from the State Government and Defence authorities near JBS will be pooled to support this initiative. The inspection included contributions from Chief Project Manager B Anand Mohan, General Managers B N Rajeshwar, M Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, A Balakrishna, and other senior officials. |
