Work Detail Qihang turbine is world-first with diameter of 260 metres Chinese manufacturer CRRC has installed a new 20MW floating offshore wind turbine – the largest in the world. The Qihang turbine was installed at the Dongying wind power testing base in Shandong. CRRC said it marks an “important step” in the state-owned company’s exploration of ultra-large offshore wind turbines. Qihang has a wind turbine diameter of 260 metres, equivalent to seven standard football pitches, and a blade tip speed of 151 metres. Each rotation of the unit can meet the electricity demand of a household for two to four days, saving about 25,000 tons of coal consumption and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 62,000 tons per year. A CRRC spokesman said: “Qihang not only stands out for its excellent power generation efficiency, but also integrates a number of cutting-edge, innovative control technologies to ensure that the floating unit maintains extreme stability during operation, with minimal swing.” After completing the relevant testing and certification, the unit will be put into the deep sea area for grid-connected power generation.
