Work Detail Modernisation and expansion of infrastructure are the biggest challenges for Africa’s energy sector, she says Mamusa Mabodi is a Mechanical Engineer who started her professional journey in the power generation sector as a Boiler Plant Engineer and Risk Engineer. Her career later transitioned into strategic roles in management consulting and corporate strategy. Currently, at the Central Energy Fund, Mamusa pioneers as a New Markets and Technology Project Manager. For Mabodi, it is a volatile yet interesting period for the energy sector as countries navigate climate considerations, and she believes the energy transition is more than reducing carbon emissions. “It is a comprehensive paradigm shift that will reshape economies, create new jobs, and enhance energy security. To be a part of it represents an unprecedented opportunity of a lifetime.” Starting her career at power stations, in a male-dominated environment, came with significant hurdles. “As a petite Black 22-year-old, I faced challenges, mainly finding myself in spaces where my voice was marginalised and my contributions overshadowed.” Yet, these experiences helped her grow, offering her opportunities to build capabilities and expand her influence in the energy sector. These challenges shaped her approach to decision-making and work ethic. “I’ve learnt to be resilient and approach situations with a blend of assertiveness and empathy. Recognising the importance of advocating for myself and others who may not have the same platform has been essential.” Mabodi identifies modernisation and expansion of infrastructure as the most significant challenges facing Africa’s energy sector. She emphasises the importance of transitioning from outdated coal plants to renewable energy technologies like solar and wind. “Quick gains can be achieved by investing in renewables, which provide immediate benefits in terms of energy access and job creation.” On policy changes, she sees enormous potential in using incentives. “Trade and industry policies enabling factories to manufacture renewable energy technologies on the continent are critical. This way, Africa benefits not only as consumers but as participants in the entire value chain.” In her work, Mabodi prioritises aligning projects with local community needs and capacities. “I use innovative strategies that assess the socio-economic impact of projects, ensuring they contribute to the betterment and inclusion of marginalised communities.” ESI Digital technologies for data collection and analysis further enhance her approach, improving decision-making and project implementation. Her vision for Africa revolves around access to clean, affordable energy and leveraging the continent’s natural resources, including its critical minerals and rare earths, to sustain growth. She imagines Africa’s leading renewable energy innovation while safeguarding its resources for future generations. Mabodi finds inspiration in Nelson Mandela’s words: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” This quote resonates deeply with her, especially when faced with the complexity of energy projects. “Many times, I look at the magnitude of projects we embark on, and it almost scares me. This is where the quote comes in handy – it’s not impossible! It CAN be done!” Energy transitions do not happen very often if history is anything to go by, so being part of the energy sector in this period is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “The work we do today will influence generations to come, combat climate change, reduce energy poverty, and create a more equitable society.” As the market changes, she sees ESG supporting all stakeholders. “This framework has a strong influence on my work, ensuring accountability and sustainability in project development while prioritising social equity.” Outside her professional life, Mabodi has a creative side as a self-taught seamstress. “It’s a fun escape, though it comes with some undesired consequences when people start requesting specific items. It transforms a fun hobby into a source of pressure, obligation and limited creative room to manoeuvre,” she laughs. Ultimately, her vision for Africa is optimistic and ambitious: a continent empowered by clean, affordable energy, driving economic growth and innovation while preserving its resources for future generations. With leaders like her at the forefront, Africa’s energy future looks brighter than ever. ESI
