Work Detail Project expected to help expand the rapidly growing island villages in Kenya The commissioning ceremony for a mini-grid is a significant leap forward for the communities residing on Wasini Island, Kenya, renowned for its pristine beauty and tranquil surroundings. This project, the first of its kind implemented under the Kenya Electricity Modernisation Project (KEMP) solar mini-grids subcomponent, is funded by the World Bank in partnership with the Kenya Government through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC). The project cost KSh350 million (around $2.7m) and provides power to 600 households. Mini-grid project signals expansion of island villages in Kenya The island, inhabited by approximately 4,000 people, has been isolated from modern amenities, and the absence of electricity poses significant challenges. The Wasini mini-grid electrification project is expected to help expand the rapidly growing island villages, enhancing security and spurring social-economic activities in the area by connecting schools, health facilities, religious institutions, administrative centres and households to clean energy. The project encompasses 1,820 solar panels with a capacity of 737kWp and 247 lead acid batteries with a total capacity of 2,276kWh. The power is distributed via an 11.02km low-voltage power distribution line and supported by three transformers. A 70kVA standby diesel-powered generator supports the solar power plant during times of low capacity. ESI
