This long-term initiative is funded by Universal Energy Facility (UEF), a finance facility administered by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) An expansive Lagos market is weaning itself off diesel powered generators after introducing 200 stand-alone rooftop solar photovoltaic systems. The Iponri Market is a major commercial cluster located in Surulere in the heart of Lagos with around 3,000 stores and stalls representing a diverse group of retailers, including tailors and embroidery shops, printing presses, hair and barber salons, pottery factories, laundry services, frozen and cooked foods, offices and more. In the initial phase of this project, 200 stand-alone solar systems were installed, equating to 1MW capacity and displacing petrol generators with an estimated annual CO2. savings of 896 tonnes of CO2.equivalent (tCO2.-eq). In late 2024, the project grew to 450 solar systems (combined installed capacity of 2.25MW). This long-term initiative is funded by Universal Energy Facility (UEF), a finance facility administered by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and executed by SOLAD Integrated Power, a clean energy and technology company. The project aims to transform Iponri Market into an energy hub and charging station for neighbouring power off-takers in electric bikes, EVs and cellular towers. Part of the project involved rolling out electric cooking stoves powered by the installed solar panels to the market’s food stalls, transitioning from using gas stoves – an exemplary Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) implementation.
