Work Detail The system will power homes and healthcare centres and facilitate small businesses in Mambasa In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a solar EPC company has completed and commissioned a 120kWh hybrid solar PV mini-grid project. The turnkey system involves a distribution line for 350 users and has a ground-mounted battery energy storage capacity of 225kWh alongside a 72kVA generator. The mini-grid system, which incorporates lithium-ion batteries, will power homes and healthcare centres and facilitate small businesses in Mambasa – a town in the north-eastern Ituri Province of the country. DRC mini-grid project provides energy safety net The mini-grid includes a Ring Main Unit (RMU) that uses the Alpha energy storage system to collect all real-time information for online monitoring and to identify any faults in case they occur. While hydropower accounts for 96% of domestic power generation in the DRC as of December 2022, this system will benefit the residents of Mambasa by providing a sustainable power supply when hydroelectricity capacity is low or unavailable. To complete the project successfully, Aptech Africa had to overcome challenges such as insecurity in some regions, poor roads and strenuous customs clearance processes for goods entering the country. Damage to materials also had to be dealt with to ensure completion of the project. ESI
