Work Detail Ethiopia’s electric vehicle market indicates significant growth potential, with over 100,000 EVs already functioning in the country The Ethiopian government has announced plans to expand the country’s Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Speaking to the state-owned Fana Broadcasting Corporation, Bahru Oljra, Executive Director of Energy Sector Control at the Petroleum and Energy Authority of Ethiopia, stated that charging stations will be installed every 50 to 120km. He said currently, there are three types of charging stations in the country: at home, public service, and commercial, with service fees collected at the last. The plan aims to make it less daunting for electric vehicle users to drive long distances without running out of power. This effort is part of the country’s larger plan to minimise reliance on fossil-fuelled vehicles and modernise transportation infrastructure. The future of transportation in Ethiopia is in Electric Vehicles In January 2024, the country became the first country to ban the import of non-electric vehicles. The Ministry of Transport and Logistics stated that Ethiopia could not afford to import petrol and diesel; thus, it will no longer allow fossil-fuelled vehicles to enter the country. The ministry announced in March of last year that it has put in place various incentives to speed up the East African country’s transition to electric mobility. Bareo Hassen, Minister of Transport and Logistics, announced the approval of the duty-free import of EV parts to be assembled in the country. The country also introduced a 5% tax on partially assembled EVs and a 15% tax on imports of fully assembled EVs. Hassen said that the move to electric vehicles would benefit Ethiopia economically by saving a significant amount of foreign money spent on fuel expenditures each year. Ethiopia’s electric vehicle market indicates significant growth potential, with more than 100,000 EVs already functioning in the country, according to the ministry. The government said they plan to increase this number to 500,000 within the next decade, replacing 95% of fuel-powered vehicles.
