Work Detail The initiative has raised awareness of the importance of clean cooking The Sanyu Bakery company in Uganda is on a unique mission: training and employing people in solar cooking. The company undertook a year-long pilot phase resulting in 1,738 women gaining financial independence to date. The initiative is hosted by the SELF in partnership with RHF to equip participants with skills in solar cooking and baking, marketing and accounting, to create career pipelines in the culinary space. The organisations deployed the solar cooking units at two locations known as the Sanyu (happiness) bakeries. These commercial-scale appliances can bake, roast, dehydrate and cook a variety of foods on a large scale. People can come to the bakeries and receive skills training in solar cooking and, once they have graduated, can apply to work at one of the two bakeries or use the units, free of charge, to set up their cooking or catering businesses. According to the UN, 2.1 billion people rely on polluting cooking fuels, the vast majority living in sub-Saharan Africa. These fuels, such as charcoal and wood, are estimated to cause two million premature deaths annually. By focusing on solar cooking, the initiative introduces an alternative solution for food production in this region. This initiative, in a largely un-electrified region of Uganda, has raised awareness of the importance of clean cooking and increased local demand for cleaner alternatives. ESI
