Each module in this programme offers practical knowledge and networking opportunities to equip participants for success in the clean energy sector Women entrepreneurs in the energy sector have until 24 January 2025 to apply for the African Women in Energy and Power (AWEaP) Just Energy Transition (JET) Skills Development Programme set to take place from 11 to 13 February. This is an opportunity to join a community of like-minded entrepreneurs and industry leaders providing access to lectures, networking and mentorship designed to help entrepreneurs thrive in South Africa’s clean energy sector. The initiative is organised by AWEaP, funded by the US Department of State – Bureau of Energy Resources Accelerating Women’s Empowerment in Energy (AWEE), implemented by Winrock International and supported by Sasol. AWEaP states they recognise that entrepreneurs at different stages of their journey in the energy and power sector have unique needs and aspirations. “Whether you’re just starting out and looking to diversify your business interests, have recently entered the sector and seek to expand or diversify your focus areas, or are a seasoned entrepreneur aiming to solidify your position, our programme is tailored to accommodate and support your specific goals. “No matter your level of experience, we are here to provide you with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to thrive in the dynamic landscape of the energy and power sector.” Each module in this programme offers practical knowledge and networking opportunities to equip participants for success in the clean energy sector: Policy understanding: Learn about SA’s JET policy environment and the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan. Financing energy projects: Discover funding options and how to access project financing, with a focus on women entrepreneurs. Value chain insights: Dive into value chains, from solar to hydrogen and nuclear, identifying low-barrier entry points. Market participation: Explore opportunities in utility, commercial and residential markets in South Africa. JET skills are key to make South Africa’s future a green one A National Business Initiative (NBI) report released last year emphasised the importance of new skills training for a workforce faced with a transition to new energy sources and technologies. “By coming together to align our workforce with the demands of a greener future, we can secure a more inclusive, equitable South Africa—one where no one is left behind as we embrace a just transition. In this context, skilling to support the Just Energy Transition is critically important. The voluntary coalition of South African and multinational companies stated that the country’s skills landscape needs to be aligned with the needs of the future and have the capacity to adjust in a dynamic way to support the speed and scale that is needed. “A demand-led approach to skilling is the cornerstone of ensuring that our workforce is prepared for the opportunities ahead. It is also critical that we work with the current skilling system to adjust, strengthen existing structures, and bridge the gaps that hinder progress,” NBI said. |
